What we learned building an AI résumé builder
Lessons from designing, shipping and operating Vitao — on AI features that help, ATS rules, and honest pricing.
We build products as well as advise on them. Vitao — our AI résumé builder — has taught us a few things worth sharing.
AI should remove friction, not add a chatbot
The temptation with any product in 2025 is to bolt on a chat box and call it AI. We went the other way: AI in Vitao does specific jobs — drafting a summary, tightening a bullet point, reviewing a finished résumé — each invoked exactly where the user is stuck. The measure isn’t “is there AI”; it’s “did this save the user a frustrating ten minutes”.
The ATS rules shape the whole product
Because résumés are parsed by machines first, structure isn’t cosmetic — it’s functional. Every template has to stay machine-readable no matter how the user edits it. That constraint drove a surprising amount of the architecture.
Honest pricing is a feature
Vitao is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. That’s partly principle and partly product: it changes what users expect and how we earn trust. It also forced discipline — the product has to deliver value immediately, not lock people into a monthly drip.
